Be prepared! I am not sure there is a single dish that smells more amazing while it’s baking in the oven.
(Please note: I rarely measure my ingredients when cooking. I tried my best to give you a rough idea of some of the measurements) When it comes to seasoning, I usually just do a couple of shakes. I never measure them! If you love a certain spice, add an extra shake. 🙂
What you will need:
A sauce pan
A 9 X 11 baking dish
1 stick of margarine
A couple spoonfuls of flour
S & P
Thyme
Onion Powder
Parsley
Milk
3lbs of Yukon Gold Potatoes (Washed and thinly sliced with skins on)
Ham (Chopped)
Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese
Cooking Spray
What to do:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees
Melt 1 stick of margarine in a sauce pan over medium/low heat
Add about 3 heaping spoonfuls of flour
Season with S & P, Thyme, Onion Powder and Parsley
Give the ingredients a good mix and cook for a couple of minutes
Add about 3-3 ½ cups of milk
Turn the heat to high and bring to a boil. Whisk ingredients for a couple of minutes. Once the sauce becomes thick and smooth remove from heat (Important: Do not leave unattended. This sauce will burn easily and needs to be stirred frequently)
Coat a 9 X 11 Baking Dish with Cooking Spray
*Place one layer of potatoes in the dish
*Sprinkle with chopped ham
*Spoon Sauce over the top
*Sprinkle a little sharp cheddar cheese over the top
Repeat the previous 4 steps until you have 3-4 layers
Cover with aluminum foil and bake in a 375 degree oven for about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until there is a nice bubbly crust on top.
(I baked a second dish without ham to be used as a side for my pot roast dinner the following day. I’m all about saving time in the kitchen. Prepare it once, eat it twice) 🙂 🙂
Enjoy!!
