Treats for Thanksgiving – Oreo, Chocolate and Pretzel Turkey Treats

Today, my kids and I made cute lil’ turkeys.  I am constantly trying to come up with different ways to keep my children engaged throughout the day. It has been one of those weeks (yes, I know it’s only Tuesday 😉 ), but Lord knows we’ve needed all of the engaging we can get this week. I have found, from experience, that days go very smoothly when I have activities planned for my children. A happy kid = a happy momma. A happy momma = a happy kid. No wait, the latter is not always true, especially when you are dealing with toddlers. (They really do have minds of their own)  Ahem. You know what I’m talking about…..right?  🙂 Since Thanksgiving is in two days, I thought this would be perfect.  We would accomplish a few things at once and that is amazing! I am all about killing 4 birds with one stone these days.

  • My kids would have a fun activity.
  • They would have a treat for tonight if their dinner plates were clean.
  • We would have an item for the dessert table at Thanksgiving.
  • We could packaged up gifts for our loved ones.

One of the items you will need to make these turkeys is Oreo cookies. I must tell you this was the first time in my life I have ever bought Oreos! True story!! I’ve had them before, but I’ve never actually bought them. I was shopping at Target and couldn’t find what I had in mind: the old school oreo that I remembered from my past. I saw Chocolate Covered Oreos, Double Stuffed Oreos, Golden Oreos, Triple Double Chocolate Oreos etc etc.  I couldn’t believe how many varieties there were. Panic almost set in and then my eyes found what I was looking for. Anyway, I thought you might find that interesting. 🙂  Let’s get to the complete list of ingredients that I used:

Here is what you will need:

24 oz package of chocolate chips (I used Toll House Semi-Sweet Morsels)

I package of Oreos.

2 packages of candy eyeballs (I used Wilton)

I package of mini pretzels (I used Synders of Hanover)

Orange Decorating Icing (I used Wilton)

Red Sparkle Gel (I used Wilton)

I must mention, you will have some candy eyeballs left, but one package was not enough to turn a whole package of oreos into turkeys. You could choose to have some oreos left, and just use one package of candy eyeballs. 🙂

  • I emptied the entire package of chocolate morsels into a glass bowl and microwaved it for about 1 ½ minutes. I stirred the chocolate with a spatula for a couple of seconds and it was the perfect consistency.

  •  My children arranged groups of three mini pretzels onto sheets of wax paper.

I used a pair of kitchen tongs to coat the oreos in chocolate and it worked out perfectly. I placed an oreo on each of the pretzel groupings.

My daughter quickly placed on the candy eyes.

Once the chocolate was dry, I used orange decorating icing to add the  beak and red decorating gel to add the wattle ←(yes, I had to google that. I had no idea what it was called. Ha!)  And here is the finished product. Gobble Gobble! Aren’t they cute?!

Let’s take a closer look.

Thanksgiving Turkey Treats

We packaged some Turkey Treats up and will give them as gifts on Thanksgiving Day. (Sorry, family, if I’m ruining the surprise, but the real gift will be when you taste one. YUM! Salty and sweet; such a great combination!)

If you follow my blog, you may have come to realize that I am a bargain shopper. I was raised that way; every little bit of savings helps! My mother was a coupon clipper, saver extraordinaire. I have definitely learned from her. I may be able to snag some bargains every now and then, but I will never compare to my mother. She is one of those people that can purchase things on sale with coupons and have the store pay her! Anyway, she found these amazing Martha Stewart Treat Boxes boxes for an unbelievable price and gifted them to me. My heart skipped a beat! I love them!! Aren’t they adorable?!
